My slowly growing (hard to find at a decent $$) collection of Micky Jupp music continues to impress. The curmudgeon of rocknroll had recorded his 5th solo album by 1983—Shampoo Haircut and Shave—and in impromptu curmudgeon form Jupp went into a self imposed exile/retirement.As for the album Shampoo Haircut and Shave? It is good. Quite good as a matter of more-precise fact.Jupp who writes sings and ‘guitars’ also shines on ‘boogie’ piano on probably my favorite song (if I had to choose) British Railway Blues.More Than Fair follows and is probably the one song ‘80’s music fans’ would like.Boxes and Tins is a song that as far as I know Dave Edmunds did not borrow from Jupp. It sounds like a song Edmunds would play. He had borrowed two or three from Jupp before (You’ll Never Get Me Up In One of Those, for one example…).Songs 8 and 9 offers someone playing mouth harp (no listing in personnel) with, especially, Reading Glasses sounding the most like a blues tune on the album. The first minute of Hot Love reminds me of Hand Jive by Eric Clapton—gradually steering away from the 1970’s hit. There’s a hint of mellow country (and harmonica, again) with Catstye Cam—and Mickey wishing he could do the vocals over again (see liner notes). The good liner notes offer Mickey Jupp’s curmudgeonly honest confessions and are written by a confessed ‘Juppophile’, a Brit named Roger Dopson. He is kinda’ amusing—with one too many uses of the word ‘whilst’. Must be a ‘bloody’ English thing.By the 2000’s Jupp was painting and owned a gallery happy to be his own boss.Apparently the band The Refreshments charted a Jupp tune in the Swedish top 20.The Refreshments have recorded plenty of Jupp tunes (as of 2013).Sounds good to me; as does the occasional use of synthesizer on More Than Fair (in fairness—a pretty simple song) as well as the last song Little Miss America. Album was better on the second listen.Ian Duck-guitar Tex Cormer-bass and Paul Atkinson-drums fill out the Shampoo Haircut And Shave band.4.8 starsMickey Jupp started playing live again, too, with old Legend band mate Mo Witham. You just can’t keep a good legend down (retired) forever.
